Women's Western Illinois Tournament

This weekend the Lady 'Hawks traveled down to Macomb, IL to take place in the Western Illinois Invite. The Invite features a number of schools that award scholarships from Division I, II, and NAIA. For the tournament the Lady 'Hawks used all 15 players and split them up into two separate teams. This was a great opportunity for all the ladies to get playing time, and they all played well.

The Jackie Vitale and Sydney Divelbiss both played in the 1 singles draw. Both players won their first round, and found themselves playing against two tough players from Olivet Nazarene. Jackie and Sydney both fought the whole way, but their opponents were just too tough, and both ladies lost their matches. This set up the first all of many all Whitewater matches. This one was for 3rd place and Sydney came out victorious with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. The 2 singles draw featured Alexandra Bayliss and Megan Kasten. Megan struggled in her first two matches losing them both. Alexandra won her first and second round only to lose in the finals to a tough player from the University of Missouri St. Louis. Lauren Aguilar and Erika Williams played in the 3 singles draw, and won their first match. Both ladies came up against tough opponents in the next round, and couldn't come up with the win. Erika and Lauren then faced off in the 3rd place match and Lauren was victorious. Abby Day and Kelly Foster played in the 4 singles bracket. Both Abby and Kelly took their first round matches. Abby won her second round to advance to the finals, but Kelly wasn't as lucky. Abby then won her final match against UMSL to win the 4 singles draw. The 5 singles draw featured Jessica Vitale and Kelsey Fitzgerald for the Lady 'Hawks. Kelsey came up with a strong first round pushing her opponent to a third set tiebreaker, but she couldn't come up with the match. Jess won her first and second round in tight matches, and found herself in the final. Jess played the girl Kelsey lost to in the final, and lost the match 1-6, 4-6, although the match was tighter than the score. In the 6 singles draw Hillary Franzen and Ashley Miller both lost tight first round matches, and found themselves playing each other in the finals of consolation for the 6 singles bracket. Ashley had to withdraw though due to a back injury. The 7 singles draw featured Caitlin Fitzgerald and Kristin Zeilinger. Both players lost in the first round match, but met in the consolation final. On the way to the consolation final Caitlin had to beat a tough player from Division I Western Illinois. At the 8 singles draw Maddie Benhoff was the only Lady 'Hawk in the draw, and she came out victorious winning two tough matches along the way.

In the doubles draws the Lady 'Hawks had two teams in the 1 doubles draw Alexandra Bayliss/Sydney Divelbiss and Megan Kasten/Jackie Vitale. Both teams won their first round, but both teams were not as lucky in the semis. Bayliss/Divelbiss rolled through their opponents to reach the finals, but Kasten/Vitale fell in a tough match. Divelbiss/Bayliss ended up taking second in the draw, and Kasten/Vitale took third. The 2 doubles draw featured Lauren Aguilar/Kelly Foster and Erika Williams/Hillary Franzen. Aguilar/Foster and Williams/Franzen both advanced to the semis and the results were similar to the 1 doubles bracket. Williams/Franzen advanced to the finals, and Aguilar/Foster fell to earn a spot in the third place match. Williams/Franzen took 2nd and Aguilar/Foster took 3rd. In the 3 doubles draw there were two more Lady 'hawk teams, Abby Day/Jessica Vitale and Kelsey Fitzgerald/Ashley Miller. Day/Vitale advanced all the way to the finals, and Fitzgerald/Miller lost their first round, but advanced all the way to the finals of consolation. Both teams were successful in their respective finals securing 1st and 5th place in the draw for the Lady 'Hawks. In the 4 doubles draw Caitlin Fitzgerald and Maddie Benhoff teamed up to win the draw without dropping a game. This included a great 8-0 win over a tough Western Illinois team.

Overall, these were some great results from our ladies this weekend. We showed that we were one of the deepest teams in the tournament with two players or teams in every bracket performing well. Next up for the Lady 'Hawks this weekend are two matches against conference opponents, at UW-River Falls and UW-Stout.
