Men and Women have big weekends for Warhawk Tennis!

  9/5/14

Both the men's and women's team were in action this past weekend, and were pushed in great competition.  On Friday and Saturday, the men hosted a seven team tournament in which the other six teams (Chicago State, Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Olivet Navarene, St Francis, and Cardinal Stritch) were all scholarship programs.  On Saturday the women traveled to Wheaton, IL to take on host Wheaton College and Carroll University.

The Men's Warhawk Fall Invite tournament featured eight flights of singles #1-#8 and four flights of doubles #1-#4.  Each flight had a bracket of eight players or doubles teams, so each player played 3 doubles matches and 3 singles matches in two days.  On Friday we played all three doubles matches and one round of singles that was interrupted by rain at the end of the day.  Day 2 started by finishing the rain delayed singles matches and then the final two rounds of singles.

Friday was highlighted by the Warhawks winning three of the four flights of doubles in great competition.  Ben Shklyar/Jake Humpreys won the #1 doubles flight with two 8-7 tiebreak wins and an 8-6 finals victory.  At #2 Cam Laktash/Zane Navartil won the title with 8-3, 8-6, and 8-4 wins.  At #4 Seb Lauterbach/Justin Bowman dominated their bracket losing only 9 games on the day.  Venky Yuvaraj/Matt Zurowski won the consolation draw of that same bracket.

Saturday was highlighted by new freshman Zane Navratil winning the #3 singles flight (making him 6-0 on the weekend) and some other strong performances.  Michael Schnarr was impressive despite playing on an injured ankle.  He won two matches and then dropped a match tiebreak in the final of the #5 flight.  Matt Bisbee lost a heartbreak first round, then played well to get to the consolation final of the #4 draw before dropping a match tiebreak as well!  Marty Beck and Matt Zurowski each won their consolation draws (#6 and #7).  Raman played well in the #2 draw playing pretty even with three very solid players, but coming up on the wrong end of each of them.

9/6/14
The women won a pair of 7-2 decisions on Saturday on the road.  Wheaton had a VERY deep team, as we lost at #5 and #6 singles.  Alicia Beck back back at #5 after losing the first set, but lost in a match tiebreak.  We had nice wins at the top of the lineup, especially Bridgid McGuire who came back against a very tough opponent to win in a match tiebreak.  Our doubles was very solid from top to bottom in that match.  Against Carroll we lost at #1 doubles and #1 singles.  We had sat our #1 doubles team, and ended up losing that position 9-7.  McGuire/Beck played very well in a tough spot and gained some great experience.  At #1 Humphreys played well, but lost to a very strong ranked opponent Abigail Pellet in a third set match tiebreak marathon.  Rachel Siemon and Brooke Hendricks had some nice wins in this one, and Talyansky and Upthagrove played well all day.  Ashley Miller and Jillian Wallace appear to be becoming a duo to be reckoned with in doubles
