UWW Men vs. Lake Forest and Carthage

After having last week off the UWW Men's Tennis team returned to action against Lake Forest College and Carthage College at Four Lakes Athletic Club in Elkhorn, WI. In the morning the Warhawks took on Lake Forest College. The Warhawks played well in all the doubles including a great performance by Cam Laktash and RJ Rademacher at 3 doubles. The lone doubles loss came at 2 doubles where Erik Scanlan and Kevin Friend fell in a match tiebreaker. 1 doubles had control of the match the whole time and never gave it up. After doubles the Warhawks were up 2-1. The Warhawks proceeded to sweep all the singles matches, winning the overall match 8-1. After the Lake Forest match the Warhawks and their family and friends headed to nearby "world-renowned" Lake Geneva for Lunch at Popeye's Bar-B-Que.

After returning from Lake Geneva the Warhawks took on the Red Men of Carthage College. This was an important match for the Warhawks because Carthage is a very strong singles team, and we have really been focusing on singles the last few weeks in practice. Doubles started out and the Warhawks took out Carthage at 2 and 3 doubles and 1 doubles was in a dog fight. The Red Men of Carthage eventually pulled out the 1 doubles match and the Warhawks lead 2-1 after doubles. In singles the Warhawks started out strong winning the first set on every court, but Erik Scanlan on court 5. Eventually Scanlan got his act together and won the match in 3 sets. The Warhawks ended up winning 2-6 singles, and the only match that was left was Byron Balkin at 1 singles. Again Balkin was involved in a tight match. He had won a long first set in a breaker and at one point needed a break to stay in the second set. He ended up coming up with the goods when he needed it to get the break. After that Byron closed out the match with a hold and another break. Byron's match capped off an 8-1 win for the Warhawks.

This was a great match for Byron, his opponent was a highly ranked regional player and he forced Byron to come up with great shots off his backhand wing. Not only was this a great match for Byron, but it was a great match for our development as a team overall because it forced us to step our singles game which is something we've been working on this whole week. The next match for the Warhawks will be against UW-Madison March 17th at 12:00pm in Madison, WI. If you are in the area come out and support the 'Hawks!
